Injuries

If you have sustained a sports-related injury, there are steps that can be taken immediately to minimise discomfort and damage, including:

Rest – avoid using the affected limb as much as possible, do not continue to exercise

Ice

Compression

Elevation

The next step in treating the injury is to seek expert advice, from your GP, or Accident and Emergency department, depending on severity, and/or a physiotherapist or sports massage therapist. Injuries are usually given a few days to rest before being treated.

Unfortunately, a sports injury will impact your exercise programme, and depending on the injury, may require lengthy rehabilitation. But be patient and follow the advice of your doctor or therapist. Returning to activity too soon, or not following the rehabilitation prescribed, can lead to long term problems.
